1880 - American High Society
Trends caught on overseas in the United States, where wealthy gentlemen sought a less formal alternative to rigid tailcoats. Young tastemakers created buzz when they arrived to formal events in so-called "tailless dress coats" which American high society initially dismissed as improper, but eventually came to be revered as the tuxedo jacket.
